Ages
What aged players are appropriate for this program?
.Choose the appropriate division. There are three (3) divisions of American Legion Baseball in the state of Alabama
i.
Junior Varsity (Junior) - this division services players that would likely play junior varsity sports or below in high school. Players are the current academic year 9th graders or younger. Most of the players are 15 years old or younger.
ii.
Varsity (Senior Division II) - this division services players that have at least one year of high school sport eligibility remaining during the next high school season, players are current academic year 11th grade or younger.
iii.
19U (Senior Division I) - this division services the current academic year 12th grade and below player. Some players from the previous year’s graduation class may be eligible to play.
When
What time of the year does this program run?
Season begins with tryouts and runs until playoffs in July. The 19U division continues until mid-August for the World Series.
Where
Where are practices and games typically held?
Each team uses a home field. The home field is normally on a high school field.

When are practices and how often are they?
Each team schedules their own practices.
Games
How many games will they play? What days of the week?
Teams will normally play 20-30 games over the course of the season and will usually fall on two of the three days of the week: Tuesday, Thursday or Saturday. Some teams will play primarily on weekends.

Are jerseys provided or are they purchased separately?
Each team determines the uniform for the players.

What costs beyond registration fees should be expected?
There is normally a entry ticket price for fans to attend games.

How can I form an American Legion Baseball team?
a.

How much does it cost to form a team?
a.
Each team registers on the national American Legion baseball website, https://baseball.legion.org/.
i.
The 19U division and some Varsity teams are classified as Senior (adult) teams at the national level because certain players may be 18 years old. National insurance is separated into youth and adult categories based on this classification.
ii.
For high school athletics in Alabama, AHSAA and AISA rules state that a student may participate if they do not turn 19 before the first day of school for that academic year. Our Varsity program follows these high school eligibility rules, which means it is treated as a high school program, not a national adult program.

d. Varsity and Junior Varsity teams have the option of registering as a State of Alabama Legion team only and providing a copy of their own insurance that
includes these entities as additional insured: The Department of Alabama American Legion, American Legion Dept of AL Youth Baseball Association, Inc, the Post that the team is affiliated.
e. If a program has a 19U team then it is recommended that the other teams affiliated with the program should be registered as a national team in case replacement players are needed for the State, Regional or World Series tournaments.
3.) How to pay?
a. State-only teams send checks payable to:
i. American Legion Dept of AL Youth Baseball Association, Inc 120 North Jackson Street, Montgomery, AL 36104
b. National teams will pay online when you register your team on the national website.
4.) How much does it cost per player?
a.
The team and individual fees vary greatly from team to team. Each team determines that cost. Most teams will charge fees between $150- $750 per player.
5.)
Do the coaches need background checks?
a.
Yes, each coach must register and submit a background check through the National American Legion website. Background checks are vetted by a third party

6.)
Are the coaches required to have training?
a.
Yes, each coach must complete a certification course. The Protect Youth Sports organization training link will be sent to each coach registered on the national website.
7.)
How many players are allowed on a team?
a.
Each team has a maximum of 18 players.
b.
Official rosters are due on June 25 and will be approved by June 30
8.)
What is the uniform requirement?
a.
Each jersey must have a number that is not a duplicate jersey number.
b.
The jersey must have an American Legion baseball patch on the left sleeve or left chest, a baseball hat and baseball pants.
9.)
Game and season details
a.
Games are scheduled as 7 inning double-headers or 9 inning single games. Regular season games are normally limited to approximately 2 hours for a 7-inning game.
b.
The host team is responsible for providing a field prepared to play the games, umpires and paying the umpires. Umpires can cost up to $90 per umpire per game. Each team is responsible for providing three (3) new baseballs for each game.
c.
The season begins the first week of June
d.
Teams will receive schedule request form before the season begins
e.
The league will use GameChanger for schedules, results and statistics.
i.
Teams are required to join the Alabama American Legion Gamechanger group
4.
Invites will be sent before the season starts
ii.
Teams (both Home and away) are required to score games using the GameChanger app for Alabama American Legion Baseball games.
iii.
The home team’s GameChanger will be the official scorebook

10.)
State tournament –
a.
JV and Varsity tournament – 17-19 July. It is planned to be a pool play format with a 3 game guarantee.
b.
19U Senior – 23 – 26 July. It is planned to be a double elimination format.
2026 Summer Season
The Summer Baseball season officially begins on June 1st of each year. It ends with the state tournament in mid-July. The 19U state champion moves to the Regional Championship tournament.
